Zhou, XY. Mike

Prize winner composer of the 
Composition competition"The contemporary piano 2016"
for his work “Ordinary Landscapes-Solitude" for piano

Born in Beijing and raised between Beijing and New York, Mike Zhou is an emerging composer saxophonist based in New York and Boston. He attended the Manhattan School of Music (MSM) precollege division during high school, studying saxophone with Dr. Paul Cohen and composition with Dan Barhava, and is currently a 4th year undergraduate saxophone student at the New England Conservatory(NEC), studying with saxophonist Ken Radnofsky. During his undergraduate years at NEC, Zhou became increasingly interested in composition and started taking private lessons with composers Dan Barhava (MSM) and John Mallia (NEC).  

In late 2014 - 2015, Zhou won first prize in the national division of the Golden Key Music Festival’s Piano Composition Competition for his solo piano piece Wandering. Although he is a classically trained musician, Zhou also incorporates many other genres in his music. He studied Jazz with Jazz Saxophonist Brian Levy and worked at jazz studio Michiko Studios. He also has experience in rock bands and film. Zhou will be attending the Masters of Music program in Composition at the New England Conservatory in fall 2016.
