A Legacy Preserved

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at Arizona University has received a major gift from the widow of photographer Benn Mitchell: his complete archive, along with $1 million for the Center’s collection fund.

The donation ensures that Mitchell’s work, which spans Hollywood glamour, New York street life, and mid-century American culture, will be preserved and made accessible to scholars, students, and the public.

Esther Mitchell’s Gift

Announcing the gift, Esther Mitchell explained her decision:

“They don’t just store photographs. They study them, teach with them, and share them with the public. That combination really made me feel it was the right place.”

Her contribution adds both Mitchell’s archive and financial support to a collection that already holds 110,000 works by over 2,200 photographers.

Benn Mitchell’s Career

Benn Mitchell began his career early, selling his first photograph to Life magazine at just 16 years old. Soon after, he relocated from New York to Los Angeles, where he captured portraits of Hollywood stars, including Humphrey Bogart and Gene Autry.

In the 1950s, Mitchell established a commercial studio in New York, photographing everything from advertising campaigns to candid slices of cultural life. His career spanned decades, culminating in a 2023 retrospective at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, two years after his death in Florida.
