Huei Li Lam

Prize winner composer of the Composition competition “The contemporary piano 2017″ for her work for piano “Distant Structures”

New York based pianist, Huei Li Lam (aka Hayley) is an award winning composer who specializing in both contemporary jazz and classical music. She began her studies in music at a very young age, earning her Associate Diploma, ATCL Recital Piano from the Trinity College of London when she was just eleven. She then proceeded to earn her Licentiate Diploma, LTCL Recital Piano and Associate Diploma, ATCL Recital Violin a couple of years later. Huei Li is also a holder of the Yamaha Teacher’s Grade specializing in Piano since the age of twelve.

With a profound interest in contemporary and jazz music, she was awarded a scholarship to further her studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. With her exceptional musical abilities, she completed her Bachelor of Music with a Five-years Dual Major Degree Program in Performance and Jazz Composition in just one and a half years. She was very privilege to be under the tutelage of many world renowned Jazz musicians including Joanne Brackeen, David Fiuczynski (Guggenheim Fellowship winner), Alain Mallet (pianist for Paul Simon), Steve Hunt (keyboardist for Allan Holdsworth, Greg Hopkins (former arranger for Buddy Rich Orchestra), Bob Pilkington, Dennis Hamm (keyboardist for Thundercat), Eguie Castillo (Grammy award winner), Dave Santoro and many more.

She earned her title as the 2017 Young Composer Showcase Winner at the International Jazz Conference in New Orleans, where her composition “The Unknown Bell” was featured and performed by the Downbeat Award-winning jazz ensemble UNC Jazz Lab Band I, directed by Dana Landry. Her honors was recognized and published in the Jazz Education Network program book through Downbeat magazine publisher. With her musicianship compared to as “Stravinsky meets Brookmeyer”, she was selected as the Finalist at the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra (SWOJO) Annual Jazz Composition Contest for Women Composer in 2016. Huei Li is also a 2017 Global Music Awards (GMA) winner in the Composer and Jazz Big Band category. GMA is a top-tier international music competition that
honors talented musicians around the world. Huei Li also devotes some of her time in nurturing other young musicians. She runs the piano program at the Noel Pointer Foundation, named after the legendary Grammy-nominated Jazz violinist Noel Pointer. She currently holds membership in JEN, a network dedicated to building the jazz arts community by advancing education, promoting performance, and developing new audiences.

“Distant Structures”, for piano

Distant Structures (2017), for solo piano, is a work that seeks to explore the relationship between structural chords and the different tonal ranges of the piano instrument. There is a juxtaposition of modern composition techniques and certain jazz elements, that is exemplify throughout the work, where modal exchanges, bitonality and quartal voicings could be heard.
