Indigenous Art Showcase Highlighted Growing Cultural Links Between India and Australia

A special art showcase in New Delhi highlighted the strengthening cultural ties between India and Australia by bringing Indigenous artistic traditions to the forefront. The exhibition focused on the work of Australian artist Grace Lillian Lee, whose creations draw inspiration from First Nations weaving and design traditions.

The exhibition was inaugurated by Philip Green, who emphasised the importance of Indigenous knowledge systems in shaping contemporary art and fostering cultural dialogue between the two countries. He noted that such events create opportunities for deeper understanding of Indigenous heritage and creativity.

Lee’s works demonstrated how traditional weaving practices from Australia’s First Nations communities can be reinterpreted in modern artistic contexts. Her designs blended ancestral techniques with contemporary aesthetics, highlighting how Indigenous cultural knowledge continues to evolve while remaining rooted in heritage.

The exhibition was hosted at the National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy, which has increasingly been used as a platform for cultural exchange between Indigenous and tribal artists from different countries. Organisers said the initiative aimed to encourage dialogue around identity, sustainability and shared craft traditions.

Officials noted that the event reflected a broader effort by India and Australia to expand cooperation beyond trade and technology into cultural diplomacy. Through exhibitions, artist exchanges and collaborative programmes, both countries are using art and heritage to strengthen people to people connections.
