The Society of Antiquaries – Raising Money for the Past

The Society of Antiquaries of London has launched a series of fundraising events titled Past Matters: Shaping Our Future at Burlington House, aiming to raise crucial funds to support the Society’s bold vision of transforming its historic home into a world-leading centre for the study of heritage. The talks and events will take place between 28th October and 19th November 2025, with tickets now available to purchase online.

This series of events is set to play a pivotal role in enabling the Society to commission architectural plans that will shape its future at Burlington House, while expanding its research and educational programmes, and creating dynamic new spaces for exhibitions, seminars, and events. The Society’s long-term goal is to ensure that Burlington House remains a place of inspiration, scholarship, and discovery for generations to come.

Key Highlights of the Fundraising Series

The series will begin with a lecture by Tim Knox CVA FSA, Director of the Royal Collection, on Tuesday 28th October, at the Royal Academy of Arts. This talk, titled “Royal Patrons and Collectors in the Twentieth Century, from King Edward VII to Queen Elizabeth II,” will explore the royal family’s patronage and collecting habits over the 20th century, from Edward VII’s penchant for white and gold décor to Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy with the founding of the Royal Collection Trust.

On Halloween night (Friday 31st October), Geoffrey Munn OBE FSA, well-known Antiques Road Show expert, will lead an intriguing talk on the 16th-century rock crystal charmstone held at the Society of Antiquaries. “Myth and Magic – A 16th-century charmstone and its links to the Society of Antiquaries” will reveal the mysterious tale behind this magical object, its connections to Dr. Dee, Queen Elizabeth I’s necromancer, and its fascinating journey through history.

“Drawn to Discovery at the Antiquaries”

On Thursday 6th November, Abbott & Holder will host an evening reception at the Society, offering a unique chance to view highlights from the Society’s remarkable collection of 45,000 prints and drawings. Notable pieces include works by Wenceslaus Hollar, William Blake, George Vertue, Thomas Girtin, and others, some recently attributed to female artists. The exhibition will also showcase Pietro Fabris’ views of Pompeii and William Blake’s drawings of Westminster Abbey.

Hats off to Tradition: Tales from The Cocked Hat Club

On Wednesday 19th November, the Society will present a unique and fun-filled evening titled “Hats off to Tradition: Tales from The Cocked Hat Club”. This event will delve into the history and eccentricities of the Cocked Hat Club, a society founded in 1852, known for its peculiar customs and notorious behaviour during election ballots. The evening will feature theatrical displays, quirky regalia, and traditional headgear, offering an unforgettable glimpse into the lighter side of the Society’s history.

Exclusive Prints by George Vertue

In addition to the talks, the Abbott & Holder Gallery (30 Museum Street, London) will be selling early engravings by George Vertue, the Society’s first official engraver. These prints, created from plates originally made for the Society, will be available for sale from 21st October until December 2025, with 65% of the sale price going towards the Society’s fundraising efforts. These engravings include historical royal portraits and are important pieces of art history.
