Art Meets Purpose VR Mall’s Festival Turns Waste Into Creative Statements

When you walk into VR Mall in Anna Nagar, Chennai right now, it isn’t just shops and food courts that catch your eye. The building’s corridors and open spaces have been turned into a lively art platform that highlights environmental awareness and creative reuse of materials.
The current showcase is part of the Madras Art Guild Festival, a celebration of contemporary art that fills parts of the mall with installations, sculptures and thought-provoking pieces inspired by ideas around sustainability and community. Artists have used this public space to push creative boundaries, blurring the line between traditional gallery environments and art for everyone to see and feel.
One installation that stands out near the entrance is a large sculptural arch made from upcycled plastic collected along the Chennai coastline. Ordinary waste like bottles, electronic scraps and mirror fragments has been transformed into solid tiles and structure components after extensive experimentation — giving new life to materials most people see as trash.
The festival isn’t just about visual impact. By bringing environmentally conscious art into a shopping centre, organisers are hoping to spark fresh conversations about how creativity can respond to real-world issues like plastic pollution. Shoppers and visitors end up encountering these works as part of their everyday walk through the mall, making art and sustainability feel less distant and more connected to daily life.
This blending of community space with artistic expression reflects a broader trend in Chennai’s cultural scene, where public art festivals are increasingly using familiar local venues to make art more accessible and relevant to a wider audience.
