Harry Potter Books Set for Auction Record

A complete set of seven first edition hardback copies of the Harry Potter books, all signed by J.K. Rowling, is currently available at Heritage Auctions, and the bidding has already reached $100,000. This set is a collector’s dream, and it’s expected to break auction records.

The Rare Set

The collection includes a rare Hardback Issue of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, one of only 500 copies ever printed. This edition is a first printing and includes several distinctive features such as the Bloomsbury publisher’s logo at the bottom of the title page, a print line reading “10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1,” and the famous “1 wand” printing error on the school supplies list on page 53.

Three of the books in the set are signed by their respective illustrators on the front covers:

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire signed by Giles Greenfield.
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix signed by Jason Cockcroft.
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, also signed by Jason Cockcroft.

The books are being sold together with a collection of provenance materials, including promotional flyers, entry passes, event information sheets, and promotional paper bags, all of which relate to the signing events and acquisition of the books.

One-of-a-Kind Artwork

Also included in the sale is the only commissioned replica front cover artwork ever produced by Thomas Taylor for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The original artwork, created in 1997 when the book was first published, fetched $1.92 million at auction in 2024. The replica, which was commissioned by Dr. Mike Wain after missing out on the original artwork, is currently bidding at $50,000.

Taylor, who created the iconic cover art, described the commissioned piece as “the only replica I shall ever paint.” This unique artwork is accompanied by a handwritten note from the artist and includes his signature, date, and title on the lower border. The artwork depicts Harry Potter on Platform 9¾ at King’s Cross Station, with the Hogwarts Express arriving in a cloud of smoke and stars. The piece has since been immortalized with a permanent memorial at London King’s Cross Station, where fans can take photos to recreate the moment.

A Collectible Milestone

The Harry Potter series has sold more than 120 million copies worldwide since its debut, and the first edition hardbacks remain some of the most sought-after collectibles in the literary world. The first book was also adapted into a blockbuster film in 2001, titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States.
